BOLTON HS’ ACT OF KINDNESS TOUCHES GRIEVING SHELTON COMMUNITY
Following the tragic loss of a high school student late last month, the entire Shelton community has faced many dark days. But a ray of sunlight came unexpectedly last week when two students from Bolton High School traveled more than 50 miles and arrived at the front door of Shelton High School. They delivered a gorgeous plant and a hand-made card that read, “Our thoughts are with you. The Bolton High School Community sends our deepest sympathies to you as you mourn the loss of Eddy Conklin. We know exactly what you are going through as we also lost 2 students within 2 years. Time heals, as well as the support of friends.” The unexpected gesture brought several staff members and students to tears when they learned of this act of kindness. As Shelton High School Headmaster Dr Beth Smith said, “It is a reminder that educators are teaching students intrinsic values that will last a lifetime.”

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org
Dear Legal Mailbag: Have you noticed that parents increasingly have boundary issues as to what is their business and what is not? I have, and I need your help. One of the parents in my school is actually a certified teacher and she has announced that she will be attending faculty meetings at my school. The irony is delicious, of course, because I never before met a teacher who wanted to attend a faculty meeting.
