Dear Legal Mailbag: Student cellphone use is out of control, and desperate times require desperate measures. The principal at my school and I were kicking around some ideas, and I had a bright idea that hitting these kids in the wallet would be most effective. As you might imagine, we regularly confiscate cellphones when students use them in violation of school rules. Students may be more compliant if they know that we will keep their cellphones until they pay a fine. Continued

Symposium for Female Athletes to be Held at New Haven Open
A symposium for female high school athletes and school administrators entitled, "what's your healthy? (TM) finding my balance", will take place at the New Haven Open at Yale tennis tournament on Monday, August 19th. Sponsored by Aetna, the symposium will feature top notch panelists, including CAS Executive Director Karissa Niehoff, discussing how women in athletics can live a well-rounded, healthy life. More

CAS Activity Advisors Conference
The Connecticut Student Activities Conference is please to offer a full-day conference for club, class, student council, honor society, debate, robotics, and other advisors at ALL LEVELS on October 21st at the Four Points Sheraton in Meriden. New Leaders Academy Offers Support to Beginning Administrators
The Connecticut Principals' Center welcomes first and second-year principals and assistant principals to attend the New Leaders Academy. Formerly known as the Mentor-Mentee Program, the New Leaders Academy, will bring together experienced administrators with young colleagues in the first two years of their administrative careers. Academy sessions will feature a topical presentation followed by cohorts of new administrators who will meet with an experienced facilitator to discuss problems of practice associated with the day's topic. First Year Principal Award Nominations Now Open
Nominations are now being accepted for the CAS First-Year Principal Awards for 2013-2014. These awards recognize individuals whose instructional leadership, innovative practices, and managerial skills have had a positive impact on the school district in their first year of school administration. One award is given at each level: elementary, middle and high school. The nomination form is available online at http://casciac.org/go?690. Deadline is September 13th.
Ed Aston Inducted into in High School Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Ed Aston, retired Cheshire High School swim coach, who was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame yesterday as part of the NFHS Summer Meeting in Denver, Colorado. NFHS Takes Positions on Health and Safety Issues
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee has approved four new or revised position statements on a variety of issues concerning the health and well-being of student-athletes. The committee issued a new position statement on the use of padded head gear in non-helmeted sports, and revised previous position statements on invasive medical procedures, concussions, and sports-related skin infections.
