The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org
DEAR LEGAL MAILBAG: I am confused by your advice. As a faithful reader, I was interested in your response last week to the principal who wanted to put a Christmas tree up in the foyer of his elementary school. I couldn’t agree more that we have a responsibility to keep Christmas out of our schools because we don’t want any of our students to feel unwelcome during the holidays. My confusion comes from trying to reconcile this important responsibility with the criticism I got earlier this week. Actually, it was more than criticism – they are threatening to sue me!

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND ATHLETIC DIRECTORS
A reminder that the deadline for e-signing the CIAC’s new student data privacy agreement is December 1, 2018. The electronic signature must be applied by the district superintendent – or his/her designee – via the CIAC Eligibility Center. Once logged in, the agreement can be reviewed and signed by clicking on the "E-SIGN CAS-CIAC DATA PRIVACY AGREEMENT" button under the "General" tab. As the agreement covers all member schools in a district, a superintendent in a district with multiple high schools would only need to log in and complete the contract on one school's eligibility center.
